Random access
In computer science, random access (sometimes called direct access) is the ability to access an element at an arbitrary position in a sequence in equal time, independent of sequence size. The position is arbitrary in the sense that it is unpredictable, thus the use of the term "random" in "random access". The opposite is sequential access, where a remote element takes longer time to access.

Competitive analysis (online algorithm)
Competitive analysis is a method invented for analyzing online algorithms, in which the performance of an online algorithm (which must satisfy an unpredictable sequence of requests, completing each request without being able to see the future) is compared to the performance of an optimal offline algorithm that can view the sequence of requests in advance. An algorithm is competitive if its competitive ratio¿the ratio between its performance and the offline algorithm's performance¿is bounded.

Data buffer
In computer science, a buffer is a region of a physical memory storage used to temporarily hold data while it is being moved from one place to another. Typically, the data is stored in a buffer as it is retrieved from an input device (such as a mouse) or just before it is sent to an output device (such as speakers). However, a buffer may be used when moving data between processes within a computer. This is comparable to buffers in telecommunication.

Upper and lower bounds
In mathematics, especially in order theory, an upper bound of a subset S of some partially ordered set (P, ¿) is an element of P which is greater than or equal to every element of S. The term lower bound is defined dually as an element of P which is less than or equal to every element of S. A set with an upper bound is said to be bounded from above by that bound, a set with a lower bound is said to be bounded from below by that bound.

Sequence
In mathematics, a sequence is an ordered list of objects (or events). Like a set, it contains members (also called elements), and the number of ordered element (possibly infinite) is called the length of the sequence. Unlike a set, order matters, and exactly the same elements can appear multiple times at different positions in the sequence. A sequence is a discrete function. For example, (C, R, Y) is a sequence of letters that differs from (Y, C, R), as the ordering matters.
