ABSTRACT
Humans see at high resolution only within a few degrees of the direction we are looking. Moving our gaze position around the current scene, we build up the rich visual landscape we consider reality from a sparse set of details, filled in with coarser data from our peripheral vision.

Perceptually-based foveated virtual reality
SIGGRAPH '16: ACM SIGGRAPH 2016 Emerging TechnologiesHumans have two distinct vision systems: foveal and peripheral vision. Foveal vision is sharp and detailed, while peripheral vision lacks fidelity. The difference in characteristics of the two systems enable recently popular foveated rendering systems, ...
Foveated 3D graphics
We exploit the falloff of acuity in the visual periphery to accelerate graphics computation by a factor of 5-6 on a desktop HD display (1920x1080). Our method tracks the user's gaze point and renders three image layers around it at progressively higher ...
Is Foveated Rendering Perceivable in Virtual Reality?: Exploring the Efficiency and Consistency of Quality Assessment Methods
MM '17: Proceedings of the 25th ACM international conference on MultimediaFoveated rendering leverages human visual system to increase video quality under limited computing resources for Virtual Reality (VR). More specifically, it increases the frame rate and the video quality of the foveal vision via lowering the resolution ...
