Murat M. Tanik

This book consists of essays selected, modified, and improved from Jon Bentley's famous “Programming Pearls” column in Communications of the ACM. As a dedicated reader (and user in undergraduate classes) of this column, I am delighted to see these essays in a book. The book is composed of three parts. Part 1 is preliminary and reviews the basics of programming. Part 2 covers performance. Part 3, “The Product,” discusses general-purpose routines for sorting, searching, and heaps. The book also contains hints and solutions to selected problems, an index, and a catalog of algorithms (as an appendix) relating the contents to typical algorithms topics. Bentley also provides an amusing epilogue, which should be read first. The epilogue answers questions such as “Why did you bother to collect these columns into a book__?__” and “Do the techniques scale-up to real software__?__” In short, this is a delightful book for programmers. It can also be used as a supplement in software engineering and related courses for undergraduates.
