Abstract

This volume contains the papers presented at the Fifth Asia-Pacific Conference on Conceptual Modelling (APCCM 2008) which was held in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia from January 22 to 25, 2008 as part of the Australasian Computer Science Week (ACSW 2008). On behalf of the program committee we commend these papers to you and hope you find them useful.

The Asia-Pacific Conference on Conceptual Modelling series focuses on disseminating the results of innovative research in conceptual modelling and related areas, and provides an annual forum for experts from all areas of computer science and information systems with a common interest in the subject.

Multimedia data modelling: moving up the ladder
pp 3

Multimedia data modelling is radically different from the traditional data modelling due to the special requirements imposed by multimedia data. One fundamental issue of concern is the notorious "semantic gap" between what were stored in the database, ...

Differentiating conceptual modelling from data modelling, knowledge modelling and ontology modelling and a notation for ontology modelling
pp 7–17

This paper considers conceptual modelling for three purposes namely data modelling, knowledge modelling and ontology modelling. It differentiates between the nature of the conceptual models for these three. It then proposes a representation suitable for ...

Model eco-systems: preliminary work
pp 19–26

Modeling is core software engineering practice. Conceptual models are constructed to establish an abstract understanding of the domain among stakeholders. These are then refined into computational models that aim to realize a conceptual specification. ...

A conceptual model for multidimensional data
pp 29–38

This paper introduces a Conceptual Data Model for Data Warehouse including multidimensional aggregation. It is based on Entity-Relationships data model. The conceptual data model gracefully extends standard Entity-Relationship data model with ...

A framework based measurements for evaluating an IS quality
pp 39–47

There is an increasing community of researchers trying to draw attention to the importance of evaluation issues. Some approaches can be followed to evaluate the quality of software, but gives no guidance on how to construct a high quality software ...

A practical guide to testing the understandability of notations
pp 49–58

Model-driven development is the process of creating models of a software system and transforming them into source code. Since the stepwise transformations can be done automatically or by hand, the notations of the models should be both precise and ...

Constraint acquisition you can chase but you cannot find
pp 59–68

We identify established tableaux techniques as an invaluable tool for semantic knowledge acquisition in the design process of relational databases.

Sample databases allow users and designers to judge, justify, convey and test their understanding of the ...

Context analysis: toward pragmatics of web information systems design
pp 69–78

On a high level of abstraction a Web Information System (WIS) can be described by a storyboard, which in an abstract way specifies who will be using the system, in which way and for which goals. While syntax and semantics of storyboarding has been well ...

Making workflows context-aware: a way to support knowledge-intensive tasks
pp 79–88

In business processes, knowledge-intensive tasks are ones in which the people performing such tasks are involved in a fair degree of uncertainty. These people are required to apply and bring together their experience, training, expertise and judgement. ...

Modelling inter-process dependencies with high-level business process modelling languages
pp 89–102

The work presented in this paper targets the software integration on the level of business process models. The goal is to create the behavioural description of an integrated system that is consistent with the behavioural descriptions of the original ...

Non-functional requirements in business process modeling
pp 103–112

Business process modeling entails the capture of a set of tasks that invariably model the functional behavior of a system. Another aspect of business process modeling involves the accurate capture of operational behavior and the associated process ...
