In this paper, we introduce two sides of structure pertinent to the design and use of an artifact: embodied structure and enacted structure . We then locate these concepts in both historical and contemporary examples: the game of chess, the development of the rule of the road, and the implementation ...

In this paper we define the complex relation between task models and user interfaces in a declarative manner. We do this by describing how a task model can be transformed to other functionally equivalent task models, how it can be mapped to a user interface prototype, and how a user ...

This paper introduces a new design method for multi-agent systems (MAS) that incorporate logic programming. The DigitalFriend is an example of a MAS with a built-in logic language interpreter, which is aimed at having the end-user as developer. It uses small fragments of logic as dynamic glue , bringing together ...

Modeling and analysis of complex systems is becoming increasingly popular due to the availability of powerful processors and the possibility of distributing the analysis over a large set of cooperating computers. Within this context, simulation is often the method of choice for studying the validity of a model and for ...

Petri nets are a formal modelling tool very well suited to the description of distributed and concurrent systems which exhibit synchronization and contention for shared resources. Adding random temporal specifications to Petri nets, stochastic Petri nets are obtained from which event driven simulators can be automatically constructed. This paper discusses ...

Many companies aim to use Web services to integrate heterogeneous and/or remote applications in SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) contexts. We noticed the code of the Web service is monolithic, mixing concerns, and difficult to maintain. On top of all, any change requires to re deploy the modified Web service. Business ...

Multi-goal pathfinding (MGPF) is a problem of searching for a path between a start and a destination allowing a set of goals to be satisfied. We address MGPF in ubiquitous environments that accommodate cyber, physical and social (CPS) entities from smart objects to sensors and to humans. Given a MGPF ...

In this paper, we define the online localized resource allocation problem, especially relevant for modeling transportation applications. This model takes into account simultaneously the dynamic locations of the resources and the consumers, together with their online nondeterministic appearance. We instantiate the model with the urban parking management problem, and propose ...

The execution of a multiagent-based simulation (MABS) model necessitates a scheduler that synchronizes the agents execution and simulates the simultaneity of their behaviors. In the majority of MABS frameworks the scheduler activates the agents who compute their context to decide the action to execute. This context computation process is time-consuming ...

We develop Generalized Stochastic Petri Net models for several priority queueing disciplines. The building blocks of these models are explained and many variants are easily derivable from them. We then combine these building blocks with product-form queueing network models. Numerical results are provided that illustrate the effectiveness of the method.
